Questions about organ donation are common, and so are misconceptions. Simple, trustworthy facts can help clear up common myths about donation and give families and community members a clearer understanding of how it works and the impact it makes.

  • Fact: Medical teams always prioritize saving your life. Donation is only considered after death has been legally declared and all lifesaving efforts have been exhausted.

  • Fact: People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. At the time of death, medical professionals assess which organs or tissues might still be viable.

  • Fact: Donors are treated with respect and care. Organ and tissue donation does not prevent open-casket funerals

  • Fact: Most major religions support donation as an act of compassion and generosity. Donation is widely accepted by faith communities.

  • Fact: Many people with chronic conditions or past illnesses are still eligible. Each potential donor is evaluated individually to determine what organs/tissues may be viable.
